In the summer of 1937, a sixteen-year-old boy named Daniel Pruett contracted polio at a county fair in rural Ohio. By autumn, he had lost the use of both legs. By the following spring, he had worked his way through three college-level mathematics textbooks ordered from a catalog and was writing letters to professors at Ohio State asking questions they found unexpectedly difficult to answer.

This is not a story about overcoming adversity in the way that phrase is usually meant — as though the obstacle were merely a dramatic backdrop for an otherwise conventional success. The obstacle, in Pruett's case, was the thing that made him. The isolation. The enforced stillness. The long, uninterrupted hours that most young men spent in motion, which he spent thinking. What he built in that stillness was a mind unlike anything Wall Street had encountered — and Wall Street, characteristically, took everything it could from him without ever admitting he existed.
The Education Nobody Organized
Pruett's family were farmers in a county that had been hit hard by the Depression. There was no money for college, and in any case, the question of how a young man in a wheelchair would navigate a university campus in the late 1930s was not one that institutions had given much thought to. So Pruett organized his own curriculum.
He started with the textbooks his mother could order through the mail — algebra, trigonometry, introductory calculus. He moved through them at a pace that alarmed his parents slightly and impressed the county school superintendent enormously. By nineteen, he was corresponding with a mathematics professor at Ohio State who had agreed, informally, to guide his reading. By twenty-one, he had developed a working knowledge of probability theory and statistical inference that most graduate students would not encounter until their second year of doctoral study.
He had also developed something harder to teach: an obsessive sensitivity to patterns. Partly this was temperamental. Partly it was the product of having almost nothing else to do with his considerable intelligence. When you cannot move through the world, you watch it instead — and watching, done with enough patience and rigor, reveals things that moving past them never would.
Back Office, Front Mind
In 1946, through a connection his Ohio State correspondent had with a former student, Pruett was offered a position in the back office of a mid-sized brokerage firm in lower Manhattan. The work was clerical — logging trades, reconciling accounts, maintaining the paper records that kept the firm's operations from collapsing into chaos. It was not glamorous. It paid modestly. For Pruett, it was an education of a different kind.
For the first time, he had access to real financial data — years of it, stretching back through the Depression and the war. He spent his evenings, and many of his weekends, doing what he had always done: looking for patterns. What he found, slowly and then with accelerating clarity, was something that the firm's analysts — educated men with degrees from Wharton and Columbia — had not found, because they were not looking in the right places.
Pruett was not interested in predicting which stocks would go up. He was interested in predicting how violently prices would move, regardless of direction. He was, in the language that would not exist for another twenty years, working on volatility.
The System
Working entirely by hand — there were no computers, and the mechanical calculators available to him were crude instruments — Pruett developed a framework for modeling price variability that incorporated historical trading ranges, volume patterns, and what he described in his private notes as "the rhythm of hesitation" — the measurable tendency of prices to compress before significant moves, in ways that left detectable signatures in the data.
It was, in retrospect, a precursor to the kind of quantitative analysis that would transform finance in the 1980s and 1990s. The specific insight that prices encode information about their own future volatility — an idea that would underpin the Black-Scholes model and the entire modern options market — was something Pruett had arrived at independently, through sheer empirical grind, roughly two decades before the academics caught up.
He presented his system to the firm's senior partner in 1951. The meeting, by the account of a junior colleague who was present, lasted about an hour. The partner was skeptical, then interested, then very quiet. He asked Pruett to leave his notes. He thanked him for his time. He did not promote him.
What Happened Next
Over the following three years, the firm's trading desk quietly began incorporating elements of Pruett's framework into its risk assessment process. The analysts who implemented it were given no particular instruction about where the methodology had originated. Pruett continued in his back-office role, received a modest raise, and was never consulted again about the system he had built.
He left the firm in 1955 and spent the remainder of his working life as a bookkeeper for a manufacturing company in New Jersey. He never published his work. He never sought a patent or any formal recognition. Whether this reflected resignation, pragmatism, or simply a personality that had always cared more about the puzzle than the prize is impossible to say with certainty. His private papers — discovered by a financial historian in the early 2000s in a storage unit his daughter was clearing out — suggest all three, in shifting proportions.
The firm he worked for was eventually absorbed through a series of mergers into an institution whose name is now known to every American with a brokerage account. The methodological lineage cannot be proven in a courtroom. But the historian who found Pruett's papers spent three years trying to disprove the connection and eventually stopped trying.
The Cost of Comfort
There is a version of Daniel Pruett's story that is simply sad — a talented man exploited by an industry that has always been better at extracting value than distributing it. That version is not wrong, exactly, but it misses something.
Pruett's genius was not incidental to his circumstances. It was produced by them. The isolation that polio imposed, the enforced interiority, the years of self-directed study with no institutional framework and no one to tell him what was worth knowing — these were not obstacles he overcame. They were the conditions under which a particular kind of mind was able to develop without being smoothed into something more conventional.
The analysts who eventually used his work had gone to the right schools and sat in the right classrooms and learned to think in the right ways. Pruett had been left alone with his thoughts and a stack of mail-order textbooks, and he had thought his way somewhere none of them had been.
Comfort and credential, it turns out, are not always an advantage. Sometimes the most important thing a mind can do is have nowhere else to go.
